Precious Metals Premiums Explained

Calculate the amount above spot and understand what the premium is paying for.

Precious Metals Premiums Explained

The premium is the retail layer above the metal value. It can include fabrication, minting, distribution, dealer margin, payment costs and product-specific demand.

Dollar premium

Subtract the product’s metal value from the delivered price. This shows the total dollars paid above the underlying metal.

Percentage premium

Divide the premium by the metal value. Percentage comparison is especially important when comparing small fractional products with larger bars.

Premium is not automatically wasted

A premium pays for a real manufactured product and distribution. The question is whether the product’s recognizability, size or design is worth the extra cost to you.

Compare the resale spread

A high retail premium matters even more if the dealer buyback bid treats the product as generic bullion.
